Elective courses may include computers, digital media, art, drama, choral music, physical education, and foreign languages. Detailed information about secondary courses is included in course description booklets available in the reception office.
Theological/Character Studies
All students are enrolled in a Theological/Character studies class every semester. Courses include study in Old and New Testament literature and culture, the history of the Jewish nation and the Christian fellowship, world view, philosophy, and ethics applied to contemporary issues. All courses are taught on an academic basis and receive academic credit.
English
All students will take an English course which includes the study of both grammar and literature. Other areas of study include speech, composition, spelling, and vocabulary.
Fine Arts
To satisfy the fine arts requirement, students may take courses at school in band, choir, drama, or art.
Foreign Language
All K-8 students are required to study the Chinese language except where ESOL classes are deemed more necessary. In the Upper school, students will study Chinese language each year and take regular placement tests to determine their appropriate level.
Mathematics
Beginning in seventh grade, a two-track approach is used to accommodate the needs of more students. One track begins with Algebra I in seventh grade, the other in eighth grade. Students in both tracks must earn three math credits in grades 9-12.
Physical Education/Health
All students in grades 6-8 are required to take physical education. Students in grades 9-12 must satisfy the graduation requirement of 2.0 units of PE. Physical education courses focus on the fitness, health, and conditioning of the individual student.
Science
Middle school students will take a combination of life science, earth science, and physical science. The core curriculum in the high school is comprised of biology, chemistry, and physics. AP (Advanced Placement) Physics and AP Biology are offered to seniors.
Social Studies
The middle school social studies curriculum includes the study of world history and geography, as well as a more in-depth look at western and eastern cultures. High school students study world geography, world history, comparative politics, and psychology.
Yearbook
Each year the yearbook staff produces a record of the activities and events which occurred during the school year.
Drama/Choir
Student dramatic productions and concerts are open to students who wish to develop their abilities and express their creative gifts in this way.
